Note: This is one of my grab bag/back up posts I wrote. It's also something I'm glad to read again to remind myself while I readjust from being super sick the past weekend.
I'm scatterbrained and easily distracted by everything; a random thought can knock me out of a drawing or writing session with ease. Habits saved me. I've become dependant on them to get the things I want to get done--Done. Most of the things I do are variations from the book Atomic Habits. I recommend it!
When I want to start a new habit, be it writing or chores around the house, I experiment how many times per week or how long I do it. The first habit I started and stuck with years ago was strength-training. It took a few years to figure out what routines and days/time to do it. I experimented with 4 times a week with 6 different routines and just last year I've settled into a cozy 3 times a week with 2 routines first thing in the morning. Find a frequency and method that'll work, even if it takes a long time to experiment. For me, it can't be too much or too little, I changed things to find what makes it Just Right.
Speaking of finding the right time, I tried the "gentle habit" method to find the right time this year. You start by doing the thing for 1 minute and no more. Then every day add a minute. Even if you're feeling good and in your element you gotta put whatever it is down. I did this for the LukeKen script in early January, and now I'm up to 40 minutes of writing a day. It's still feeling good but I think I'll keep it to 50 minutes max when I hit it. But if I realize it's too much, I'll remove a minute.
